Well my world has been a bit insane. It has been and is a time of change. Its sort of gotten in the way of steady coffee photography, however, I am going to end that. I need the practice. This image was taken on the weekend, it just took me some time to get to it. I have new techniques and tools at my disposal , and i will be incorporating them into the shots.

Well this is my first cold brew of the year.It was warm enough for me to want one. I am working on a special technique for brewing it using my aeropress. I have a few new techniques for ice coffee i want to try this year. All will be detailed

Espressoalude – Americano take 3

In My extremely busy weekend, i got to grab a moment and make myself an americano. I am still working on the art of pulling a good espresso and this was a decent one. I Added hot water to the cup, pulled the CushCoffee Harrar right over it and let it rest, creama dissipating into a galaxy of flavor.

Thoughts on Coffee Common’s NYC event

So Coffee Common came to A Startup Store in Chelsea , New York City. If you know my adoration for all things coffee, you know it drew me like a moth to a flame. For $5 I got to sip on great coffee samples and get some coffee questions answered in person.

First of all what is coffee common? Well they are part of the common group. COMMON is a creative community for accelerating social change.. ( Learn more.) Coffee Common brings together world-class baristas and roasters with shared values, to create unique experiences that introduce people to the nuanced joys of exceptional coffee. (Read more here) They are doing pretty important coffee education work.

The event was well organized and broken up into three areas guided Do-It-Yourself at our Method& Bar, Ingredients and a Taste bar. Everyone running the stations were courteous & pleasant, especially Kyle Glanville (2008 U.S. Barista Champion) from Intelligentsia.

My favorite spot was the Do-It-Yourself at our Method& Bar. I got give the Hario a V60, a Chemex and a Woodneck “‘Nel” Drip Pot. I got some tips on using the Aeropress , which I already own as well.

If you’re lucky, you will get to hear my horrible voice on the portafilter podcast . I answered some questions from them.

If Coffee Common came back to the area, I would take part again and bring friends. It’s a great coffee social scene. I think there should be more, small organized events like this, even if just amongst friends.

Espressoalude – 3rd Pull

Notes on my espresso education , with the help of Coffee_Couple & BaristaOnDutY, to help improve my coffee photography.

This is today’s first tamp, after i did the pull,I realized it was over done. I need practice, and I don’t like the plastic tamp I have.

The result of my over tamping. This pull took a long time, it dripped out.

I did manage to make an imperfect ameracano , which was actually nice.

I have to work on my grind, tamp, for next go around.

2nd Pull

My second attempt, this time i had a little more time to think and note things. I adjusted the grind and the tamp, and got better cups. While the Crema was not perfect there was an improvement in the espresso pull.

I have to shoot in better light, this shot is horrible, but i know why, this will get better

I have to make the grind finer for future pulls, but I think i understand more . This machine is really letting me know how crappy my old espresso machine was. The best thing of this is, it’s an interesting photography challenge.

Not perfect but better, consider this a work in progress.

Sweet Yellow Brazil, from my most recent order from the Coffee_Couple . A great way to start the year. I made it Americano style using my AeroPress to brew. Nice Simple and clean way to start the year.
